【受付終了】〈会員限定〉「短期受入プログラムオリエンテーションのベストプラクティスワークショップ」(2019年7月12日、東京)

Course Outline


Orientation programs for in-bound, short-term students are a valuable and fundamental component of any international education program. However, orientations should not just be an explanation of policies and procedures, but must actively engage students and encourage them to examine the challenges, opportunities, and benefits of a student’s intercultural sojourn. To this end, how well equipped are Japanese university in-country orientations to address such issues as culture shock, intercultural communication and competence, mental health issues, and crisis management and disaster preparedness?
This workshop will be an opportunity for active engagement and networking. The workshop aims to
1) Allow participants the opportunity to share personal experiences
2) Collaborate on problem solving
3) Work towards developing standards for in-country orientation programs for short-term students.
4) Contribute to the professional development of international education practitioners in Japan

To date, eleven workshops have been held: July 2018, March 2017, July 2017, July 2016, July 2015, July 2014, February 2014, February 2013, August 2012, February 2012, and August 2011. There have been a total of 160 participants.

3. Qualification


The workshop is open to all and is designed for the layperson.
The primary language will be English so participants should have the ability to communicate in English in a discussion and workshop-style setting.

  • To raise awareness of the necessity for comprehensive orientation programs
  • To create a knowledge community focused on the development of appropriate and necessary standards for orientation programs
  • To share best practices of and challenges faced in providing orientation programs
  • To contribute to the professional development of international office staff
  • To facilitate direct communication and networking
